Maybe you don't like sociology right now, but why not try to approach it with an open mind if we have one of the best depts in the world instead of trying to undermine it? Even an intellectual STEM student should realize non-STEM subjects aren't useless. To me that screams a student who is not intellectually curious and doesn't want to learn for learning's sake. I can't believe how many times I've heard "I wish L&S took AP credit for breadth so I could take none". The flexible seven course breadth was meant to give students options, but instead it just ends up getting abused. People don't go to Amherst and major in CS and treat every non-CS class like dogshit. How are you even dead-set on what you want to do with your life at age 19 anyways? And the bigger question is: if you hated the humanities, why did you apply to Berkeley's LIBERAL ARTS college? L&S is by definition Berkeley's liberal arts college. It's because they choose to take the shitty classes. People in CC dream of the educational opportunity you have as a Berkeley student, but instead you go to the CC to take their classes? Breadths are treated as a "light" filler class compared to techs, but it mistakenly gives people the impression that the humanities are easier. You pay big money for the chance to take an econ class from a world-renowned (possibly Nobel-winning) professor, but instead you trash your social science requirement on online sociology from the community college. College is basically the only chance you get to try something new, to step out of your comfort zone, but many people have already thrown in the towel. In fact, most of the people I know have taken "shitty" breadths at CC or P/NP'ed them so they didn't have to care about the class.įor some reason this makes me really sad. I asked them about taking other classes for interest but I was told that the master plan was to do online breadth classes at a community college over the summer. We were discussing our schedules next semester and I noted that they were taking major classes (we are all technical majors). I realized this problem when I was talking with some friends about breadths. R/berkeley is not endorsed by or affiliated with UC Berkeley GO BEARS!
